Taiching Funeral Day 3

For breakfast dad bought lobogao with egg, and the sauce was sweet chilli with jianyougao. Pretty nice!! We departed around 8am to go to the memorial/altar room early, because 二叔 needed to line up for the parking lot.

I started to flip some lotuses as someone folded and assembled a lot last night.

It's hard gettng it to look pretty. I accidentally tore 2.... right at the last row of petals too. 三叔 brought in a bag of lotus petals (unassembled) and yuanbao folded by Wenwen or Weiwei jiejie.

For today, everone wore a full armband of filial 孝 on their right arm. Natural jute colour for the sons (uncles and aunties), and yellow for the grandkids. Remember to take it off if you need to toilet.

Today we do a er-chi, san-chi, wu-chi prayer mantra for Grandma. Traditionally you would do one each every 7 days, from 1 to 7, until the 49th day, but dad and uncles chose to do a condensed version so it's not so much work for everyone. The first session (2chi), was for the sons. Second sessions (3-chi) was for the daughters (in law). The third session (5chi) was for the grandkids.

They asked us to stamp our thumb print on the baodai bags over our names. They packed some of grandma's favourite? clothes inside.

I felt like grandma was here during the sessions. I felt her potrait was "deeper" than usual and looking at us. They gave us the mantra books and it had bopomo inside so I could sing along somewhat.

Having so many people packed into a small room, and the weather so hot, the CO2 must have been high. I got so sleepy. I also got teary at places too...

Almost everyone came today. Except for my bro Alan, and cousin Joy. I also met 表姨媽 who was grandma's older sister's daughter.

For lunch I went out for a wee walk around. It was HOT and sweat kept pooling in my mask. My skin feels so dry and wet at the same time. It prickles when I moisturise it... and looking red.

I went around a guozhai (I assume) next to 一心市場. I also saw a Fire Station.

I also walked past an old dorm? or complex of some sort that counts as a Juanchun. I remember dad would always drive past this building when we went to visit 奶奶 back when we still had our own house here.

Lots of old buildings around this area. Kinda comforting.

The building doesn't have a 4th floor. I confirmed it wasn't just the elevator since I used the stairs.

I flipped some more lotuses after the walk.

After lunch break we completed the last 2 mantra sets. During the second mantra set, 表姨媽 threw the coins, but was unable to get an agreement. Then the prayer lead/host asked mum to do it, but because she can't hear well she didn't say the instructions to grandma, and was also unable to get an agreement. So the coordnator came in and explained again, and finally got an agreement from the toss.

The third one went smoothly like the first.
I felt like grandma was looking at us.
At the end they asked grandma to follow the incense and the paper with stuff written on it, that was used during the sessions, stuck in a block of paper money (incense also stuck in it), held by cousin (3rd uncle's son, as the eldest grandson representative) to take to the big burner. All the grandkids were supposed to go, but I think tradition dictates only the males. Sad. I wanted to burn some for grandma.
We burnt 18 paper lotuses, 100 yuanbao, her clothes in the baodai, paper money, and I think something else. It was around 3:40pm ish at this time.
After they left I felt grandma wasn't there anymore. And when the grandkids came back I felt grandma hasn't returned yet. I think it's because she's still collecting our offering with buddha as it's still burning. I continued to do some more folding, and 五嬸 and 賢安 helped to fold and flip some more.  After a wee bit I looked at grandma's potrait and felt she was back.
Then it wasn't long until we had to leave, around 4pm.
Wenwen or Weiwei jiejie brought milk tea for everyone and offered me. I took a traditional pearl milk tea. It had so much pearl...
二叔 went around to get the car. And then we had to leave. We got into the elevator and almost forgot to tell 奶奶 we are leaving.
I took a pad of paper back to fold more lotuses.

We also had to drop off 表姨媽 at her relative's house. I got to see a different partof Taichung I normally don't. There's a lot of empty fields here, some had buildings built on it. A lot of new multistorey buildings were built around the place. I think they must have been Juanchun and farmland beforehand. See You Again Map did indicate there was one around the area, about 1000 households, so it must have been a really big area. It was around Chongede 18th road.

Sad how I won't be able to access Timeline on desktop anymore and grab a screenshot to insert...
We got a bit lost but found our way there.

Then 二叔 dropped us off at home and Mum and I went to buy dinner at 一心素食. We got back to the front door around 6:10pm but had no key so had to wait for dad to come home (got a ride on 四叔's motorbike). In the meantime I popped over to the 7-11 on the corner and had a look at their Sanrio collab goods I could see from the window when I passed by this morning. I bought a Cinnamonroll drink bag (could also be lunch) for a friend who lives in America. She likes Cinnamonroll. There wasn't much merch with Cinnamonroll on it so I tried to buy something that could be used as a bag for a lolita coord.

Dad came back around 6:30pm, and we went upstairs, home, had dinner. I started folding lotus petals only to realise the paper I got given was for yuanbao instead (they are printed different). So I guess I'm folding yuanbao instead (after I folded 16 petals to assemble 1 lotus). Dad made tea and I managed to fold 90 yuanbao, taking a shower in the middle. It was 10:30pm when I got to 90, and I still had to blog, so I guess I'll make up the rest to get to 100 tomorrow after the last prayer session.

As usual, spray and pray and Blis k12... and hope no one is asymptomatic or sick. Typhoon is also on the way, but I'm hoping it won't affect us that much. Buddha will organise. Amitofou.

Taichung Funeral Day 2

Woke up a few times in the night, and finally at 6am. Still jetlagged. Went to sleep at 10pm last night.

Had a fruit based club danwich and a cup of soy milk for breakfast.

Then after everyone was up we left for the altar room at around 9am. 二叔 dropped us off (did I mention he has a new e-car now? Luxgen).

Greeted grandma, my words stumbled... tried to tell her sorry I couldn't make it in time but I'm here to see her now. It was a pity I wasn't able to see her more... and then kneeled 3 times.

Helped with folding paper yuan bao today and making lotuses. 四叔 arrived and shortly 三叔 too. Then 小智 and 四叔's kids older bro Ah-Kang (Shyan-In) and younger bro Ah-Kai (Shyan-Jiun). 五叔 arrived with the bento boxes later. We had quite a few people/friends and relatives comes. There was an auntie... who I learnt that there are 4 branch families on Granddad's side... Great Grandad had 4 wives. Granddad was the child of the 2nd. Auntie is probably from 3rd or 4th but not sure. There is another relative family in Taipei who is from another branch. The main family in China should still have the tree. They talked and reminiscned, and also the manager/coordinator from the funeral home came to help discuss and organise proceedings.

Think it was 四叔 who asked us if 小智 and I wanted to go for a walk. Mum wanted to come too but then said she'll go by herself (we were waiting) and that us young ppl should go. Said bye to Grandma, we'll go for a walk and be back soon.

We passed a small park on our way and spotted an oddly placed clock on a tree. And then saw a lens sculpture.

Then we had a walk around to the Confuscious Temple, with the big gates in the road. It's also combined with the Martyr's Temple (for those who sacrificed themselves for the country, kinda like a memorial). It's so hot and humid you just keep sweating. I realised dad passed through the Kong-Miao gates every time he would drive us back to visit grandma... we also passed the 雙十國中 and they had banners celebrating the girls voleyball team 3rd time reigning champion for nationals, I assume, and also the music band's achievements on placing... we walked to Family Mart and bought a peach/lychee flavoured tea drink.

There's also a TaiPower station of some sort. Really old. The See You Again Juan Chun map said there's still a partial remnant of JuanChun near, so we talk a walk down... and got to see!!! Unfortunately at the 巷口 there was a man and woman speaking so I didn't wanna be rude and go down there to see... but from the roadside... it looked... just like Nana's JuanChun feeling....

The 巷口 is just to the right side of this photo. Google street view attached.

What the blue fenced parts were like before...

TaiPower station behind blue gates. I'm too short but I can get the phone over the blue metal gates to take a photo.

Made our way back.

四嬸,五嬸,賢安 was there when we got back. Greeted Grandma and told her we were back. Almost didn't recognise 賢安 cause I haven't seen her in 10 years.... Helped with folding paper yuan bao and lotuses with 五嬸. Then it was almost 3pm and time to leave.

小智 came with us and 二叔 drive mum and I back to Grandma's house to get a table. I went up for a pee... and also to see the house because I don't know when I'll be able to visit again, if ever, since it'll be 五叔's house and not longer grandma's... Hu'nio was there in the new cat tree, hamper section. I greeted the Ancestor Altar while I was there. After mum peed we left... and said bye to 小智.

Grandma's chair.... (one with the cusion) it felt so weird to go home to grandma, but she's not here or in her chair....

The bathroom with the tiles are so distinct. Left the loo out since I was saving the flush for after mum went...

二叔 dropped me off at Sogo real quick so I could go to Kinokuniya and try my luck at getting a Otoyomegatari book. I asked the staff and they had nothing in stock. Nothing of Mori-sensei's. The only book they had was TW ver of Scribbles vol 3. No choice, and $500 is acceptable for an artbook. Had a quick look at the stickers and stationary (they sell the Japanese ink pads!), tried to find Daydream Hour (Danmeshi's Kui Ryoko's artbook) and then paid for my book, then outed from there since 二叔 was still waiting for me, I took about 30 mins (4:05pm, came back at 4:35pm). I had a bit of a struggle with the elevators though... hard to tell if going up or not since I was tired and jetlagged.

Then got picked up, dropped home with mum, and just rested and chilled. 二叔 went to pick up dad and also bought bentous to eat on the way home. All vege diet from now... then had some tea, folded some laundry, showered and then chilled. Blogged and we sleep now.

Taichung Funeral Day 1

Grandma passed away in her sleep on 24/09 Tuesday morning (local Taiwan time), and I had a video call with her the Sunday before... she had already lost her voice and was unable to talk, but still mimed and asked if I had eaten... 😭

Funeral dates were decided on Wedsnesday afternoon (local Taiwan time).

And then short notice trying to figure out if I could fly back for at least the send off ceremony.

Very stressful 2 days getting prep done and trying to pack.

Flew out 28/09/2024 Sat morning, 吳老師 dropped me off at the airport. I can never check in online because the system errors me. And then got assigned the seats just before premium economy cabin, so lucky with the leg space. The seats are so bad since the head rest pushes your neck and shoulders forwards and I got such sore neck and shoulders.... ugh... N95 Sip mask, my face and skin was so sore about 17+ hrs of wearing it... I definitely inhaled cabin air when I yawned and the mask slipped from my assymetrical jaw.. hope I'm ok. Completely full flight, could hear 3 different coughs including one sick kid aorund me (since it's school holidays). Mad that flight was $900~ and then turned into ~$1550 2 hours later. Disgusting. KF94's for meals and pulled it down to bite and back up to exhale. Took Blis as well. Fingers crossed.

They asked to see my mask at the counter for check in, (why?! They didn't last time), and also when boarding. But to pass through the egates for security you have to take yor mask off fully, unobstructed face. I tried pulling it down first time but didn't work. It's just long enough to hold a breathe for.

Watched Puss and Boots -The Last Wish- on the plane. They had inflight wifi and miraculously Line was not blocked. Tried to snooze as much as I can. Planes are so grimy as usual. Ew. When I landed I ended up getting a Sim card for 7 days with Taiwan Mobile for $500. Awks cause I'm here for 8 days and couldn't make it work with my original trip dates later in Oct. Then went through customs, they ask you to unmask for the camera and then do the finger prints. Juuuust long enough for 1 breathe.

Baggage took ages to come out. I spotted 3 people with respirators though! One Asian man with a Niosh N100, one european man with a blue strapped Aura, and one brown-skinned gentleman with orange-strapped respirator.

No luck with Lucky land draw (they had a pinball style, danzhutai, draw screen this time). Spent some time finding the bus area and found it. Took the Ubus at 7:10pm. Paid at the counter and then went to number 3 stop. The lady at bus station asked about my N95 as she had seen it on a Korean TV show.

Snoozed on the bus, seat was more comfortable but my shoulders were already wrecked at that point. 2 hrs to get to Chaoma, dad and 二叔 came to pick me up.

Went home, showered, and pretty much went to sleep.
