Taiwan Day 31 (Taipei 8)

Yilan today! I woke up nearly at almost 7:30am but I ended up getting breakfast later cause I mucked around a bit too much... But the bus was delayed so I managed to make the 915 bus anyway.

I had lobogao from the local breakfast shop just round the corner but their lobogao had shallots and their soy sauce had garlic.... On top of that the texture was super soft and mashy.

When I got off the bus I walked through the MRT station, (also got the stamp), and then to the bus station. I paid by Yoyo card and there wasn't much people on the 1571 bus.

I fell asleep for most of the way and by the time I woke up we were almost in Yilan.

But the bus took longer than expected it was already 11am. So I'm going to be at least 15 mins late. TToTT

Once I got off the station I was surprised that you don't tap off! Toilet first, and then I decided to top up my Yoyo card at Family Mart so I wouldn't have to rush for the way home. It turned out to be a good idea.

Then walk as fast as I can to Sinramat. Sensei was already doing DIY at the table. I arrived around 11:30am!

I said I was here for DIY and was asked which one would I like to do, and how many people? I picked the same ones as what I had asked on Facebook, and Sensei set me down to do the bracelet first. She asked me to choose colours from the threads/cords.

She cut 40cm of both colours for the bracelet. And 80cm of the cotton cord for the bottle holder.

Doing the bracelet was pretty easy as it's mostly just alternating ties using the same colour as the base loop and threading the other colour through. We used some tape to keep the centre two cords from sliding.

But the finishing was a wee bit harder as we did two knots for the adjustable part. The braided part was the same size as my wrist. We used a lighter to burn the cut 0.5cm tail into the braid to hide it.

Once the bracelet was done, we moved onto the bottle holder. The shop staff were having lunch and Sensei was instructing me before eating... Pls go eat.

We had cut 3 cords of each colour, so 6 on total.

To start, we used 1 folded in half, and then did a loop tie with the other colours spaced out evenly to start. Then knotted two cords from different trees, alternating, with the length of the cord being no more than 3cm before knotting it.

I got told to hold the knot and pull the cord tails over by one so it doesn't get longer.

At the end, to make the handles we divided the tails into half and braided the halves. Then used a thinner cord to make the handle. You leave a loop on the other end and wrap, working towards the loop end. And then you thread the trail through the loop, and pull the tail end of the loop hard to encase the loose end.

Then snip snugly to allow the other end to bounce back to hide under the handle.

After this was done it was about 1:45pm. I had lunch and chose banana rice! With spiky onion herb tea.

As they make it fresh it took a while. I looked at their shop products section and the weaving they have. Always fascinated. In some of the cords they use 2 layers of thread, some 3 so it's thicker.

They are Atayal, and they also have bow weaving.

When Sensei was starting to tell me a story while referring to a jellyfish looking earring that was goat horn crocheted. It was about a tribe policeman/doctor, and 6 young ones followed him down the mountain to help carry his stuff, one young lady fell injury the water and was washed away and later found by Japanese soldiers? A movie made this into a love story. But my meal came and I never heard the end of this story.

My banana rice was sooooo fragrant. It was sweet and aromatic. The tea was lukewarm and had a grassy jelly hint to it.

But I was still hungry and I ended up ordering a serve of Millet marinated meat pizza.

The onion was a bit much but I think it made it hard for me to distinguish the millet taste. The chilli condiment is unique, it's pretty spicy and taste a 豆腐乳 type of taste to it. I found it they ferment the millet first and then mix with chilli. It's so good.

The pizza ended up being a wee bit much but I managed to finish it. And then I ordered another cup of the spiky onion tea.

After I finished eating and drinking Sensei told me to come chat. I ended up helping them make half complete bracelets for a DIY workshop of 25 ppl tomorrow that they ended up accepting on short notice. They said I was pretty fast? That's good. Lol I am customer by morning and volunteer by arvo.

When I went to the toilet I stopped by the shop next door. I think they are also a Indigenious crafts shop. They did more jewellery with precious stones and beads. Then I ran back to help with the bracelets.

Their 校長 got pulled into helping and he never helps? By the sounds of it. I also think he may be sensei's husband?

I pushed my time to the max as I was aiming to catch the bus back at 5pm. One of the shop staff offered to drop me off at the station and I got to ride on a scooter! Short 5 mins but still cool. I said bye and thanked them and they said come back next year!

I made it with about 7 mins to spare. I needed to pee but didn't want to miss the bus. I noted they have a toilet on the bus here so they should have one on the bus back. Thank goodness I was right. There were only like 10 people on the bus.

Going to the toilet was a shaky challenge, haha.

Capital Bus company has a announcement at the start and at the end. I feel like they're the better workplace bus company.

I feel asleep for most of the trip and woke up just before we went through the tunnel before entering Taipei.

I got home just before 7pm and had dinner, then helped a wee bit with 貝貝's homework. 姨媽 got these home grown mandarins from the market they are so cute.

Sleep.
